What do you like best?
I used Heartland for a small business for a few years and had endless issues. There was a new person assigned to my payroll every couple of months and the new person was never adequately trained to function in that role. I finally left them and asked them to help me either close my business or tell me what I had to do. They did not know and when I asked to have the assistance of a "supervisor" she got snippy with me because I was terminating with them.
What do you dislike?
Lack of training. Errors, errors, and more errors, Rude supervisors. Now 9 months after I terminated with them, I am still getting notices of things they didn't close with the PA Dept of Revenue - and didn't tell me to do even though I asked.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
No benefits, only grief.

Applicant Tracker was helpful at times.
What do you dislike?
The lack of ease, lack of ability to create reports, continuous errors, lack of accountability, mostly everything

The online platform has more HR functionality and features than we had before.
What do you dislike?
Our Heartland account manager quite after we signed. Onboarding was a disorganized disaster. Our current account manager is only in the office for 3 hours at the same time we are because they're in a different time zone. A lot of our data was not uploaded or was uploaded improperly, the API for our time tracking looks hi-tech for the 90s, the salesperson was a "Yes Man" but turns out they couldn't' deliver on some things.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be prepared to manually review everything Heartland enters during set-up as it's apparently very manual and is subject to human error. Also, be prepared to review every paycheck for errors for several pay periods. Request a payroll specialist/account manager in your own time zone. Don't assume Heartland knows anything about your payroll, what's normal to you may not be to them.

Payroll is a little bit easier than it was before but 4 months in and we are still much further than we were with our previous payroll procesor.
Horrible track record with tax payment. Expect notices every quarter that your taxes were not paid the correct amounts. They want you to email all notices you get and the tax team will take care of them about 2 months after they are sent in. By that time your next quarter taxes will also have been paid wrong. I got a notice in February that heartland didn't with hold or pay my taxes since the end of the 3rd quarter of 2022 and I owed over $4k. They don't ever check the amount due for taxes and just pick a number to pay. I've switched companies now and they say they will refund my tax funds that have been with held once their tax team gets to it in another two or three months. Better off filing all taxes by yourself rather than deal with Heartland. Pick any other payroll.
What do you like best?
Heartland Hire, online on-boarding for new hires is the best feature.
What do you dislike?
Rudeness of employees and slow response times. I dislike being able to make simple changes to employee benefits, such as changing IRA amounts or adding a recurring deduction. I usually have to contact a Heartland employee to make the change. They have software issues on a weekly basis, with little communication. We have low confidence in Heartland so we try to complete payroll a few days in advance to be certain payroll will get processed.

Using Heartland payroll has helped us with reporting and posting our payroll expenses, being able to break down by Department etc.
