SonyLIV is an Indian subscription-based streaming platform launched in January 2013 by Sony Pictures Networks India, serving users across India and global regions. Offering a vast library of over 40,000 hours of live sports, TV shows, movies, originals, and news content, the platform is accessible via web browsers, Android, iOS, smart TVs, and OTT devices. As of mid‑2023 it had around 33 million paid subscribers.
Technically, SonyLIV runs entirely on AWS cloud infrastructure and leverages native AWS media services—MediaConvert for VOD transcoding, MediaLive for live-stream encoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for CDN distribution. It supports adaptive bitrate streaming (HLS) to maintain consistent quality across devices with varying network speeds.
SonyLIV handles real‑time interactive features—such as the “KBC Play Along” live quiz—with latency under 100 ms by using ElastiCache and SQS for fast messaging. For interactivity and live updates, it relies on Lightstreamer, capable of syncing data to hundreds of thousands of users simultaneously. Its content management system (‘Blitz’) is powered by MongoDB Atlas, offering flexible, scalable CMS capabilities. The platform uses a technology stack including Java, JavaScript (React or Angular), Python, Go (for microservices), Swift, and Kotlin for mobile apps.
