JioHotstar

JioHotstar, previously known as Disney+ Hotstar, is India’s leading OTT streaming platform offering a wide range of content including live sports, movies, TV shows, and original series. In February 2025, it officially merged with JioCinema under the Jio umbrella, consolidating technical infrastructure and content offerings. JioHotstar serves over 280 million users across India and Southeast Asia and is accessible via web browsers, Android, iOS, smart TVs, and set-top boxes.

The platform runs on a highly scalable cloud-native backend deployed primarily on AWS infrastructure. It leverages a microservices-based architecture to handle core functions like playback, entitlements, subscriptions, billing, and personalized recommendations. Streaming is delivered through adaptive bitrate technologies and content is distributed via CDNs such as Akamai for low-latency performance.

JioHotstar uses an in-house performance testing framework called Project Hulk to simulate massive traffic spikes—essential for high-demand events like live cricket matches. Real-time data analytics and personalization are powered by Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, and Spark. User interaction data, especially “Continue Watching” and personalization history, is managed using ultra-fast ScyllaDB Cloud infrastructure. The platform supports multi-profile access, regional languages, offline downloads, and ad-supported or premium plans, depending on subscription tier and region.
