What do you like best?
its simple and easy enough to use. tooling is available, community is vibrant enough. developers are familiar enough. works well with java and other jvm related technologies.
What do you dislike?
the out of box configuration is not suitable for heavy usage requirements. requires a lot of tuning. dba's usually are a pain to work with and there is always a disconnect with what is required from app perspective versus db perspective. it scales enough for a medium sized project. anything with ties to multi datacenter heavy usage is not mysql's forte. Replication performance in mysql is very version dependent and seems to improve with 5.7 onwards but still not suitable for things at scale. its not until developers start modifying the core of mysql engine, that real performance gains can be realized. its also not suitable in cloud centric development scenarios
Recommendations to others considering the product
if wanting to stick with a relational db, look at postgres, maria db. if wanting to move to a cloud provider, look at dynamodb or amazon rds. When ready to really move on to scaling applications look at cassandra, or other key value stores supporting eventual consistency models. cassandra, redis can most likely fulfill all needs if you can adjust your applications for eventual consistency and multidc replication schemes.
What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
simple datastore for various apps and processes. benefits include acid compliance and having not to worry about simple replication within DC and knowledge dissemination within/across teams. most dev teams are faimiliar with rdbms concepts and mysql in general. the simplicity is also its a downside for mysql since other db's like postgres are much better when it comes to free opensource db's.
What do you like best?
MySQL is definitely functional as it offers many features (of which I don't use a lot but mainly it allows me to set up my local server and I can use the database within IntelliJ where I run my server. Its ability to be compatible with other software used at the company is a plus.
What do you dislike?
I believe it is too complex with the number of features it offers. For experienced users I am sure the features are a plus and the complexity is not a problem. However, it took me almost 6 months to fully get used to all the settings and toggles and what they meant.
Recommendations to others considering the product
I recommend being patient with it at first and just figuring out the features you really need. As time goes on, you will get more used to it and will slowly pick up all the features and functions that MySQL has to offer. Only use it if you really need to or if it integrates well with your company's other tools.
What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
I use MySQL to store the database that I need to work on and that my server accesses when it runs. Biggest benefit again is that I don't need to open up MySQL to use it within IntelliJ.

Extremely simple to install, configure and deploy. WIth docker container options or locally for developers

No cutting edge features like hash tables, BLOB externalization or JSON native.

Downloading mysql is usually very difficult and requires a lot of setup sometimes. I teach mysql and it is known for being the most difficult to install or reset passwords if people forget. The workbench is also very old
