I used this product to run my website.
What do you like best?
Microsoft SQL Server is reasonably easy to set up and administer, and the graphical tools for managing it are relatively good. Remote connections, management, and administration also work reasonably well. Creating stored procedures for programmatic requirements also works reasonably well.
What do you dislike?
The completely proprietary nature of the platform and the high cost are the biggest drivers away from it. Until very recently you had to run it on Windows, and there are still a lot of quirks to it that make it so that it doesn't support the usual range of standard, and that make it just different enough from administering any other SQL-based platform, that it is difficult to justify choosing it as a platform.
Recommendations to others considering the product
Use something else, if at all possible. There are plenty of other RDBMS platforms on the market - some of them freely-available, some of them commercial - and most of them are much better alternatives than SQL Server. It's over-priced, with classically poor support, and just bloated for the service it provides. There's literally no reason to use it unless you are forced to by a developer that has chosen to develop exclusively to it.

Generally I have never used Microsoft SQL to solve any business problems, I am usually driven to it by the requirements of a particular piece of software that is only written for it.

Name brand, well known company with a history of new ideas

Not overly user friendly... a lot of features but no real focus on any

Handy but yet still a pain
What do you like best?
What I like about Microsoft SQL, is the ease of setup and table editing. Its backup functionality is second to none, which is perfect for enterprise environments.
What do you dislike?
Migration can be a bit difficult. We upgraded from Sercer 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 and it took two weeks.
What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Without it, we can't run a majority of our enterprise software. We use it to keep track of our network for Patch Manager
What do you like best?
They have lots of tutorials, training and are very specific.
What do you dislike?
The server lags with minimal entries into the server, maybe 200+.
