You need to get in tune with the IntelliJ IDE in order to appreciate the fullness of the Software but other than that, you really need to read a lot about IntelliJ in order to use it to its fullest extent

The truth is that enterprise edition java has gotten to be so complex that it can’t really be managed without an IDE. But this IDE is so feature-rich that learning to use it reduces productivity to zero.

* Takes forever to load. Once "loaded", takes forever to scan the projects before you actually get autocomplete and other nice features in the editor.

* You never know how to change a preference or invoke a feature because there are a million menus and no way to look up a command like in SublimeText

IDEs are sometimes a necessary evil. Otherwise try to avoid them.

We use Scala on the backend. With its concise syntax and plenty of implicits, it can often be hard to navigate the code using a text editor, even a beefy one like Sublime, so I periodically turn to IntelliJ when I need to write lots of Scala/Java code or interactively debug a web application, but otherwise I avoid it like plague because of its heavy weight, both in terms of UI and runtime performance. And yes, it freezes on a regular basis.
